'You don't need to fight the ghosts, you just need to turn on the light.'
-Rua Lalai
Rua Lalai is the stage name of Mumbai-based lyricist, producer, and vocalist Arunima Kumar. Her genre blending sound can be best described as alternative hip-hop: electronic pop rock music with rap and singing vocals.
Rua uses uncommon chord progressions and a fusion of electronically produced sounds to achieve the surreal, dreamy vibe that is characteristic of her tracks. With a strong emphasis on lyricism, her songs delve unabashedly into themes surrounding her real-life trials and triumphs - over vilifying psychiatric diagnoses, counterproductive treatments, and deep-rooted patriarchal conditioning.
With no formal training in music apart from month-long keyboard classes as a child, Rua threw herself into writing and production after dropping out of IIT Madras in her third year. As she developed her musicianship and experimented with different styles and sounds, she decided to perform the vocals herself as well.
Rua Lalai's debut single 'Cracks' is available on all major streaming platforms.
The song is about Rua noticing 'cracks' in her world and life, at a time when she was finally beginning to express what she saw and felt without letting constant accusations of villainy/weakness stop her.
The track talks about being lost, confused, skeptical, and withdrawing trust from external sources while slowly waking up.
